POLYCO & PACKAGING SA LAUNCH PACKA-CHING
THE PACKA-CHING PILOT PROJECT WILL BE LAUNCHING IN 2017 WITH THE AIM OF INCREASING RECYCLING IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS AND LOWER-INCOME AREAS AROUND CAPE TOWN AND JOHANNESBURG.
The idea behind the project is to tap into a new market of recyclable packaging material in order to decrease the amount of packaging waste entering landfills. Through incentivising a change in behaviour and a shift in the perception of recyclable packaging, we will also be uplifting the communities in the areas in which we work. Community members will be able to bring bags of recyclable packaging material (plastic, paper, tin and glass) to PACKA-CHING, a mobile recycling service that will travel between communities, and exchange it for money loaded onto a personal membership card.
The PACKA-CHING idea was inspired by many other recycling projects around the world. Through researching and brainstorming, we came to the concept of PACKA-CHING by combining elements of other successful initiatives and adjusting them to suit the very unique conditions that we are faced with in South Africa. 95% of South Africa’s population does not recycle and informal statistics quote an unemployment rate of over 45%. With the aim of increasing recycling rates, PACKA-CHING will focus on lower-income and impoverished communities, which make
up the majority of the population. This will increase access to a largely untouched stream of recyclable packaging and create opportunities for positive growth and change in these areas. Detailed below are the most important and defining characteristics of the project that will address many of the current challenges related to recycling.
