The Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (AMA) was formed in 1963 as a representative body for the entire aerosol supply chain: manufacturers, distributors, component and propellant suppliers as well as can converters.
AMA Mission was in the first instance, and remains, to ensure that aerosols in South Africa are safely made products, stored, transported and sold in compliance with relevant regulations and laws.
An Early Win …the Association members were able to collaborate on introducing and ensure environmentally friendly CFC free aerosols in the South African market, long before legislation was introduced on Ozone Depleting Substances.
This led to the development of an AMA Approved Mark for aerosols, again in the absence of Best Practices or other suitable, focussed systems to assure trade and consumers.
AMA and the Environment (2)
The AMA had from 2012 been positioning itself as a Recycling Advocacy group conveying the message that, although aerosols are currently a single-use packaged product, the empty can – tin-plate steel or aluminium, is and can be recycled.
By 2021, it became clear, that as part of the industry commitment to the Circular Economy, the AMA would need to register under Section 18 of the National Waste Act and become an active Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO). The AMA was duly registered on 16th August, 2021.
